What's Happening on the Farm

In July we processed our first steer and have been enjoying great tasting beef ever since. We have 2 more steers available to process this year and will be weaning 9 calves in a few weeks to put on winter grazing. They are currently 6-9 months old, and it will take them approx. another 12-18 months before they will be available to process.

We finished building our chicken tractor and have 9 chickens that we are raising for meat. We will process them around Thanksgiving and do a taste test. Then we hope to start raising more meat chickens next year to sale.

We have a few hens that are laying eggs, and we have 15 pullets that I raised from chicks that should be laying soon. Our eggs are soy-free.

We are now listed on www.eatwild.com. It is the #1 site for grass-fed food and facts.

We are checking into setting up a booth at St. Andrews Market in Panama City and hope to be down there 2 Sat's this month.

Getting started

I'm just getting started even though this has been a few years in the making. Over the past 2 years, I have been researching growing and producing my own food. I have a grand vision, but my husband says it will take lots of work, so we are starting with what we know.....cows. We have a small herd that produced 7 offspring last year, 5 of which are heifers that we will put back into breeding. So that leaves us with 2 steers to process for grass fed beef this year. Our momma cows have been busy giving birth and we now have 8 babies, and only 1 is a heifer. Therefore, next year year we should be able to offer grass fed beef for sale, and we are looking forward to producing healthy locally grown meat.
